NCAA gives LSU 1-year probation for violations

July 17th, 2011 No comments

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU committed major violations while recruiting a junior college football player, but won’t be slapped with any postseason bans or future scholarship reductions, the NCAA ruled Tuesday. The governing body decided to place the school on probation for a year and cited a former assistant coach for unethical conduct.

The investigation found that ex-assistant coach D.J. McCarthy improperly arranged for transportation and housing for former defensive lineman Akiem Hicks in 2009, then later tried to cover up those actions.

The NCAA accepted LSU’s self-imposed reduction of two scholarships during the 2010-11 academic year, as well as a 10 percent reduction in official visits and reductions in recruiting calls. LSU already had begun reducing official visits during 2010-11, but the NCAA expanded the punishment to include 2011-12.

McCarthy resigned in December 2009.

Reed’s trophy case was stacked, but his cupboard was bare.

Missing was the Core Four – Crystal Bullock, Adrianne Evans, Lannie Johnston and Fallon Thomas – a quartet of departed seniors who won a school-record 84 games during their four years as Bearcats and made the semifinals of the state tournament three times.

Eau Gallie wins softball state title

July 15th, 2011 No comments

The Eau Gallie High softball team captured their first state title Tuesday afternoon, beating Harmony 7-2. Here is how they did it.

Eau Gallie is in white but is the road team on the scoreboard and should bat first. Harmony is in dark blue with burnt orange lettering. Harmony uses three pitchers, by the way. None has more than 12 decisions. Today’s starter, Lauren Harris, is 8-2 with a 1.89 ERA. She is also the top hitter, with 27 RBIs, 4 HRs and a .408 batting average. She bats right-handed.
Comparative scores are all over on this one. Check the blog entry below for some notes on that, but add that one of Eau Gallie’s five losses was Braden River , the team Harmony defeated, 2-1, yesterday.
