Broward football picture starting to clear…in some districts

It’s week 10 and for several Broward County high school football teams, it’s crunch time. Five teams—Boyd Anderson, Miramar, Taravella, Stranahan, and University School—have already clinched district titles. Plenty of others, like Cooper City and St. Thomas Aquinas have clinched playoff berths. But there are still a few post-season sports up for grabs and this week will determine who gets them—or who forces tie-breakers. So after conferring with standings master Dave Brousseau, here’s where things stand in Broward County as we enter the last week of district play. I’ll try not to confuse you, but no guarantees. Some of the scenarios can make your head spin a little (they did for me).

District 11-8A District champion: Taravella (7-1, 4-0) District runner-up: Winner of game between South Plantation (6-2, 3-1) and Deerfield Beach (3-4, 3-1). Loser is eliminated.

District 12-8: District champion: Miramar (8-0, 4-0) District runner-up: TBA. This week’s games include Cypress Bay vs. Western and Miramar vs. Flanagan. If Cypress Bay (5-3, 3-1) wins, it clinches the district runner-up spot. If Western (4-3, 2-2) wins and Miramar wins, then Western is district runner-up. If both Western and Flanagan (5-3, 2-2) win, there would be a 3-way tie for second also involving Cypress Bay. The tiebreaker, if needed, would be played Monday.

District 14-7A District champion: Boyd Anderson (7-1, 4-0) District runner-up: Northeast (4-4, 3-1)

District 15-7A Although no district champion has yet to be crowned, this one’s pretty simple. The winner of Friday’s game between Cooper City (8-0, 4-0) and St. Thomas Aquinas (7-1, 4-0) is the district champion. Loser is runner-up. Both teams advance to the postseason.

District 15-6A District champion: Stranahan (4-4, 3-0) District runner-up: Winner of game between Pembroke Pines Charter (5-3, 2-1) and Hollywood Hills (2-6, 2-1). Loser is eliminated.

District 15-5A Okay, this is one of those potentially headache-inducing districts when you try to figure things out. This week’s games include Dillard vs. American Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons vs. Hallandale. If both American Heritage (7-1, 3-0) and Cardinal Gibbons (6-2, 2-1) win, they’re the district champion and runner-up respectively. However, if Dillard (2-4, 2-1) and Gibbons win, there would be a 3-way tie for first involving Dillard, Heritage and Gibbons. The tie breaker would be played Monday to determine champion and runner-up. If Dillard and Hallandale (5-3, 1-2) win, Dillard is the district champion and Heritage is the runner-up. If Heritage and Hallandale win, Heritage claims the district title and there is a 3-way tie for runner-up involving Gibbons, Dillard and Hallandale. The tie-breaker would be played Monday.

District 7-4A Nothing decided yet in this district either, but this week’s games include North Broward Prep vs. Somerset and Pine Crest vs. Inlet Grove. If North Broward Prep (6-1, 2-0) and Inlet Grove (3-5, 1-1) win, they are district champion and runner-up respectively. If North Broward Prep and Pine Crest win, there’s a 3-way tie for runner-up involving Pine Crest (2-5, 0-2), Somerset and Inlet Grove. If Somerset (2-5, 1-1) and Inlet Grove win, there’s a 3-way tie for first place and if Somerset wins and Inlet Grove loses, Somerset finishes as district champion and North Broward Prep is runner-up.

District 7-3 District champion: American Heritage-Delray (6-1, 5-0) District runner-up: Cardinal Newman (7-1, 4-1)

District 8-3A District champion: University School (9-0, 8-0) District runner-up: Chaminade-Madonna (7-1, 6-1)

District 7-2A: District champion: Glades Day (5-3, 5-0) District runner-up: Jupiter Christian (7-2, 5-1)

District 8-2A: District champion: Dade Christian (7-1, 3-0) District runner-up: Champagnat (2-4, 2-1)
