Viera at Space Coast spring football game

We are 14 minutes from kickoff, and a decent crowd is in the stands. The Hawks and Vipers will play three quarters of varsity football followed by a quarter of JV. Eau Gallie is playing at Satellite tonight, and we’ll try to have updates from there as well. Come back tomorrow night for Jim Cawley’s coverage of Bayside at Merritt Island.

FIRST QUARTER.
Both teams moved the ball a bit, but neither accomplished much until 3:02, when Viera’s Myles Jennings took a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown. It was disallowed, and the refs called for a do-over. Must be spring for everybody.

SECOND QUARTER
Viera is moving the ball through the air occasionally but hadn’t scored until late in the second period when Andrew Head connected with Connor Prater for a 65-yarder. Prater did about 50 yards of the work. SCORE: Viera 7, Space Coast 0. About a minute later, Vipers QB Nick Rittenhouse is called down in the end zone. He completed a pass to Jason Mangum in safe territory, but he was called down. Interesting call. SCORE: Viera 9, Space Coast 0. The Hawks have a nice little passing game going with Head. He finds No. 8 for an 18-yard TD pass. SCORE: Viera 16, Space Coast 0. Space Coast scores quickly thereafter, a 56-yard pass from Nick Rittenhouse to Steven Alston, who made a fantastic grab and an even better run. SCORE: Viera 16, Space Coast 7. That’s the halftime score.

THIRD QUARTER
No scoring in the third. Space Coast drove down the field on the ground but stalled at the 30 of Viera and missed a 40-yard field goal.

FOURTH QUARTER
So much for a scoreless second half. Prater scores again on what looked like the same route, this time from 85 yards away. Caleb McDaniel with the throw. SCORE: Viera 23, Space Coast 7.

FINAL: Viera wins 30-7.
