The chance of an internship
One of the pros of enrolling in the November intake of the International MBA at IE Business School is the possibility of going on a short three-month internship. At the beginning of the programme I was not interested in this option, but as time went by I realised it was a good way to get to know another city where there was a high probability of returning to after finishing the programme.
The opportunity came via the careers department, which frequently sends out emails with information about companies and internship possibilities. However, it is your own responsibility to capitalise on these opportunities and make them happen.
In order to help students ace the interview process the school designed several tracks and carried out workshops in areas including finance, marketing and consulting. I decided to enroll in the consulting track for a very simple reason: those interviews are probably the toughest and so once you are able to succeed there, you can make it happen almost anywhere.
By now you are probably asking where Im doing my internship. I moved to Mexico City, a place with more than 20 million people. I will be carrying out a regional project in the operations and supply chain area in one of the divisions of Johnson & Johnson, where they have a great programme for MBA graduates.
On the other hand, my wife, who is also enrolled on the International MBA, decided to sign up for the Venture Lab. She got through the admission process and will discuss this in another post.
In the end, you can think about the internship in many ways. Mine was an opportunity to get to know Mexico City and a very diverse company. It may be different for every one of you, but make sure you have a compelling reason to do it. And yes, that includes landing a job offer!
