Satellite vs. DeSoto County softball

The Satellite High softball team is set to play DeSoto County in the Class 3A state semifinals at the National Training Center in Clermont. Satellite is 22-7, while DeSoto is 23-6. Gulliver Prep beat Florida High 4-2 in the earlier 3A semifinal.

It looks like the Scorpions will be the visitors tonight. They are dressed in white shirts with red “Scorps” lettering, red pants and white socks. The Bulldogs are wearing royal blue shirts with black pants and blue socks.

I stood close to Satellite pitcher Carleigh Fales when she was warming up. Let’s just say I’m glad I don’t have to stand in the batters box against her. The ball makes a whistling sound as she releases it.

The National Anthem has been played and we’re about to play ball. The game will start about 40 minutes late.

The Scorpions went scoreless in the top of the first. Jenna Smith singled with two outs but was stranded when Jenna Smith lined out to right field. Smith was robbed of a hit by Lynsey Rector, who made a diving catch.

In the bottom of the first, DeSoto County also collected one hit, but did not score. Leadoff hitter Katie Hunter reached on an infield single and stole second, but was stranded there. 0-0 after one full inning.

Satellite’s Shelbie Parks reached on an error by the shortstop, but the Scorpions did not score in the top of the second. SCORE: 0-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

Carleigh Fales set DeSoto County down in order in the bottom of the second. SCORE: 0-0 after two full innings.

Top of the third: Satellite goes down in order. SCORE 0-0

Bottom of the third: DeSoto County gets a leadoff bloop single to right and advances the runner to second with one out, but is unable to score. SCORE: 0-0

Top fourth: Satellite makes DeSoto County pay for a pair of errors, scoring two runs. Morgan Kingston, who is 2-for-2, doubled and scored ona throwing error by the pitcher. Kim Spry, who pinch-ran for Fales, scored on a passed ball. SCORE: Satellite 2, DeSoto County 0

Bottom of fourth: The Bulldogs went down in order as Fales struck out one got two batters to ground out. SCORE: Satellite 2, DeSoto County 0

Top of fifth: Satellite’s Sarah Hart singled and later scored on a throwing error by the first baseman. Morgan Kingston tripled, then new pitcher Brandi Hazen walked the next two batters to load the bases. Jen Tom lined out to shortstop to end the inning. SCORE: Satellite 3, DeSoto County 0

Bottom of fifth: DeSoto County gets a single, but the baserunner is stranded at first. SCORE: Satellite 3, DeSoto County 0

Top of sixth: Satellite held scoreless. Shelbie Parks did single in the inning. SCORE: Satellite 3, DeSoto County 0

Bottom sixth: Huge momentum swing as DeSoto County scored three runs to tie the game. The Bulldogs strung together four hits — all singles — and took advantage of one Satellite error. SCORE: Saetllite 3, DeSoto County 3

Top seventh: Satellite responds in a major way, scoring three runs. The big hit was a bases-clearing triple by Kya Tucker with two outs. SCORE: Satellite 6, DeSoto County 0.

FINAL SCORE: Satellite 6, DeSoto County 3. The Scorpions play Gulliver Prep tomorrow at 7 p.m. for the Class 3A state championship.
